Back-to-School Tips and Tricks

As much as we hate to say it, summertime with our littles is slowly dwindling. Which means it’s time to start thinking about getting ready for back-to-school. While it may still be too early to do everything needed to get your little one back to school ready, thinking ahead and making a plan for next steps can keep you from scrambling. We have a few back-to-school tips and tricks for you so you can enjoy every last bit of summer with your children before sending them to school.

Gradually change bedtime

Bedtime during the summer can be drastically different than during the school year. This isn’t a bad thing, but a gradual shift back to a school year bedtime can help ease stress and maybe cut back on tantrums. You can start in small increments like going to bed 15 minutes earlier each night, until your child is going to bed at a reasonable time for school the next morning. If you don’t do a nightly bedtime routine, try adding a few simple things to help. This could include setting clothes out for the next day, reading, etc.

Organize their closet and room

Before school starts, sit down and go through your child’s clothes. Separate out clothes that still fit and clothes that are too small. This will help you inventory what they need as far as school and play clothes. Set up an area in their room where they can either pick out and set out clothes for the next day, or even a whole week's worth of outfits. This can be a gigantic time saver, especially when getting back into the swing of school.

Organize your school station

This can be whatever is helpful and necessary for your family. Whether it’s a mudroom with cubbies, or a small command center. Having a dedicated space for backpacks, shoes, jackets, homework, and a calendar are one way to help you stay organized and not lose track of important items for school. Classroom supplies list, calendar of activities, IEP information, homework station and more can really help this area house everything you need when it comes to school. Something helpful to have in this space is a monthly calendar of school lunches, most schools have these posted in parent forums. This is a great way for your child to tell you when they want a lunch packed at home or school lunch. Have your children help out getting your command center ready to go. Have cleaning supplies readily available so they can help. This might include: clorox wipes, hand sanitizer, and a vacuum. We obviously recommend the Ayla Vac, she's small and compact but gets the job done!

Get supplies

Many schools and teachers send supplies lists out early. Don’t break the bank! Many young children don’t end up using all the paper in notebooks, or have supplies still in good condition from the previous school year. Talk to your child about what supplies they can reuse and what they actually need. Many stores start having sales on school supplies in July. Another great store to look for school supply deals is the dollar store.

Sign-up to help at school early

If you’re interested, and have time,  in volunteering at your child's school sign-up early. This way you can have a clear idea and schedule of when you can help out. It’s also helpful to ensure that your calendar is cleared for that volunteer time.
