Great Books to Read with Your Kids

Reading aloud to your children is something teachers, doctors, and specialists recommend. There are many benefits including: cognitive gains, stronger visual imagery, better comprehension, strengthened emotional development, and less attention difficulties to name a few. Reading can help us understand ourselves and others. According to research, reading with your child helps to improve their literacy skills and academic achievement. 

We’ve compiled a list of most recommended books to read with your child, along with the Ayla Team’s favorite books to read with their children.

Ages 0-3: 

  • Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd

  • Freight Train by Donald Crews

  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

Nikki: 

  • Teens/pre-teens Hunger Games series

  • Younger kids: Wild Robot, The Girl Who Drank the Moon, and Out of My Mind

We like to read books together and then watch the movie adaptations, once we’ve finished the book together. 

Bethany: 

  • Little Blue Truck Feeling Happy: My son loves and always asks to read it before bed. He loves to point out the blue truck every time he sees one on the road. 

Lindsy: 

  • My kids really like the Magic Tree House series, Narnia series, and the Never Girls. My 5 year old loves any Wild Kratts books. 

Emily: 

  • My toddler loves all the Little Blue Truck board books, Put Me in the Zoo, and Brown Bear. 

  • My little girl loves reading Pinkalicious books or books with pink covers. 

  • My 8 year old likes Magic Treehouse books, Dog Man, and fact books. 

Brooke: 

  • My teenager really enjoys: The Inheritance Games, Coyote Sunrise, and The Naturals

  • My older grade schoolers like reading The Last Kids on Earth books, Lifters, Harry Potter

  • When my kids were younger grade schoolers they liked reading: The Princess in Black books, The Wild Robot, The BFG, and the Day the Crayons Quit.

  • Some favorites when my kids were toddlers were The Monster at the End of this Book, Chicks and Salsa, The Book with No Pictures, Yoga Frog, and Dragons Love Tacos.
