Halloween Alternatives

Halloween is such a fun time of year, but for some little ones trick-or-treating may be something they struggle with. Whether it’s the decorations, crowds of people, feeling anxious to go up to a door, medical risks, or so many other reasons. Don’t feel pressured to take part in activities that make you or your child feel uncomfortable or unsafe. There are many fun, creative alternative activities you can do with your family.

  • Halloween Pizza and Movie Night
  • Create Your Own Mini Carnival
  • Bake Halloween Themed Treats
  • Hand-out Candy to Trick-Or-Treaters
  • Have a Halloween Party with Close Friends
  • Attend a Smaller Trick-or-Treating Event like a local Trunk-or-Treat
  • Create a New Family Tradition

There are many reasons people may not want to hand out the traditional candy for Halloween. Some reasons could be children often have many functions they’ve already been a part of that had a lot of sugary treats, or your child has allergies, etc. If you're looking for fun alternatives to candy for Halloween, there are plenty of creative options that can still bring joy to trick-or-treaters.

  • Party Prizes, including bouncy balls, fidget toys, stamps, temporary tattoos
  • Mini Flashlights
  • Bookmarks
  • Mini Craft Kits
  • Themed notebooks or coloring books
  • Vampire teeth or spider rings
  • Slime or putty
  • Glow Sticks

Many children get a lot of candy on Halloween. This is totally fine, however some parents may feel like their child got a bit more candy than they can get through. With this in mind, there are some dentist offices or businesses that offer money or prizes for every pound of candy your child turns in. If you like the idea of turning candy in for a prize or money, but don’t have any businesses offering this around you, you can do this yourself with your child.
No matter what you decide there isn’t a wrong answer. As a parent we’re always trying to do what is best for our children. Sometimes that isn’t always the same mainstream activity others are doing, and that is perfectly fine! Whether you hand-out candy or give an alternative prize, trick-or-treat for hours or start a new family tradition and stay inside, we hope you enjoy the holiday and be safe!
