Designate Tech-Free Zones

Choose areas in your home that are always screen free. These places could be anywhere you choose in your home. Some examples are: dinner table, bathrooms, bedrooms.

Set the Example

If you expect your child to not be using screens, set an example by not using your screens. You can even schedule alternate times in the day when your child can see you not using your screens. Children take cues from the adults around them, keep this in mind when you implement no screens.

Have Substitute Activities (don’t just remove)

Don’t just take away screens without having a back up plan or activity. Not having an activity or plan is more likely to cause tantrums and aggressive behavior.

Substitute Activities

  • Listen to a podcast together

  • Read together

  • Listen to an audiobook together

  • Have a dance party

  • Play in the water

  • Have an evening toy box (these toys only come out at the end of the day)

  • Assign jobs and chores

  • Board game nights

  • Go to the park

  • Invite a friend to play

Every family will find a different rhythm when it comes to screen time, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s finding a healthy balance that works for your family. By creating simple boundaries, modeling healthy habits, and offering engaging alternatives, you can help your children build positive routines while giving yourself grace along the way. Parenting is hard enough without the guilt, so celebrate the small wins and remember that every intentional choice makes a difference.
