Hydration

Keeping your body hydrated is incredibly important, whether it is summer or winter. Be sure to be mindful of your water intake, as it is easy to become dehydrated in the heat of the summer. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, rather than a lot of water at one time.

Timing

Summer is hot, so scheduling your workouts around the cooler times of day can keep you from getting overheated, dehydrated, or sick. Morning or late evening are better times to workout, as the weather is usually cooler.

Clothing

Choose fitness clothing that is not only comfortable but lightweight, breathable, and allows sweat to evaporate while keeping you cool. Pick lighter colors that will reflect sunlight, rather than absorb it.

Protection

Make sure you are protecting your skin but applying sunscreen, even if it is cloudy outside. If you live in an area where bugs are prevalent, don’t forget to use bug spray too.

Modifications

Be prepared to be flexible, if needed. If you are following a workout routine and find something may be too difficult, too easy, or may have a previous injury preventing you from doing the move, modify the movement to something that works for you. If the weather is extremely hot, consider an indoor workout or a shorter workout.

Alternatives

Nutrition

Be mindful of how you are caring for your body. Try to ensure you have a balanced diet including fruits, vegetables, and whole foods. It’s also important to make sure you are staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Other foods can help you stay hydrated too, including: watermelon and cucumbers.

There are many tips and opinions for how to workout or stay healthy, but the most important one is to listen to your body. Just because there may be a new fitness trend doesn’t mean it is right for you. Be comfortable with what you and your body can do, because you and your body are amazing!
